Q:  WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE VILLAIN FROM A BOOK?

I had to think about this for awhile before answering.  There are so many delicious bad guys out there.  But, when I fell upon this answer in my head, I knew immediately it was the perfect one.

It has got to be Iago from “Othello” by William Shakespeare.  I know, I know.  It’s a play and the question asked for a book.  Just humor me.  And do so because Iago represents the worst kind of evil.  I think one of the reasons for that is that his motives are unclear.  Sure there are several intimated throughout the play, most of which are rooted in some form of jealousy or racism.  But, scholars actually hotly debate what the real motive is, and many argue that he was actually motiveless, and just enjoyed seeing others suffer – you don’t get much more villainous than that.  The other thing that really makes him the premium bad guy is his gift of deception.  Othello completed trusted him and genuinely loved him.  Everyone completed trusted him.  And he was actually playing them all, and loved doing it.  That is real villainy, my friends.

Who is your favorite villain?

  5. Don't throw rocks at me, but... I haven't read that one... actually I haven't read any Shakespeare. I know, I'm horrible, but... I don't know, his work doesn't appeal to me. Don't ask why, maybe it's how it's formated, like a script instead of an actual book.

    1. You didn't have to read any Shakespeare in school? We read a play every year except for the year we studied American Literature.

    2. Yeah, I'm also surprised you weren't required to read Shakespeare in school. I'll tell you what though, you've really got to give it a try. Shakespeare style and syntax take a bit of getting used to, but it so worth. He not only writes a great story with great characters, but he's got a wicked sense of humor.

Thanks for stopping by and following!!

  9. Iago is a great choice! (I'm glad I can say this since it's the one Shakespeare play I've read from start to finish.) I remember thinking when I read it that Iago was just sore because he was racist and so I undermined Othello at every possible point he could. He made me angry!

    1. There are more than a few academics that agree with you and say that racism is the reason for his motivation. I think most especially because of the nickname "The Moor". I don't know though. I think his disdain for Othello isn't strong enough to be just racism. Like, he doesn't really seem to hate Othello, but just wants to see him suffer.

He's such a delicious character to try and figure out!

  10. Oh I didn't even think of him! Iago really is a bad guy. He just knew exactly how to get people to ruin their own lives without even lifting a finger. He had the villain thing down! I hope you have a great Friday :)
